IAEA takes the case for nuclear to COP26

Published: Mon, 18 Oct 2021 13:49:20 GMT

The International Atomic Energy Agency has made the full case for nuclear to be deployed rapidly to enable the phase out of coal in a new Nuclear Energy for a Net Zero World brochure. The organisation is taking it to next month's COP26 climate change meeting to argue for evidence-based policy and "ramped up" investment in nuclear.

Canada-South Korea MoU to leverage used fuel experience

Published: Mon, 18 Oct 2021 14:50:34 GMT

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power plan to leverage data gathered through decades of experience of the storage of used Candu fuel to underpin cooperative research activities under a new Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations. They will engage in knowledge-sharing and other joint activities to advance storage, transportation and disposal practices for used fuel, and to explore opportunities to collaborate on nuclear decommissioning and waste management initiatives.

The loading of all 241 fuel assemblies into the core of unit 1 at the Shin Hanul nuclear power plant in South Korea has been completed, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power announced. The unit - the first of two APR-1400 reactors at the site - is scheduled to enter commercial operation in mid-2022 following tests at various power levels to ensure that all systems operate safely as designed.

Germans asked to keep reactors in operation

Published: Fri, 15 Oct 2021 14:16:24 GMT

Germany's phase-out of nuclear energy will only lead to the country missing its 2030 carbon emissions target, 25 leading foreign and German environmentalists, journalists and academics have written in an open letter to the German public. They call on German politicians to be "brave enough" to change legislation to at least postpone the shutdown of the country's reactors.

Energy crisis spurs Bulgaria's nuclear debate

Published: Fri, 15 Oct 2021 14:57:01 GMT

Demands for new nuclear build in Bulgaria have intensified on the high price of coal-fired electricity and the need to replace the power plants that produce it. Bogomil Manchev, chairman of the Bulgarian Atomic Forum, used a newspaper interview to call on the government to make a plan to build at Belene as well as Kozloduy.

Bruce output hits new peak

Published: Fri, 15 Oct 2021 14:58:14 GMT

Bruce Power yesterday announced the achievement of a new site generation peak and set a goal of achieving a site peak of 7000 MW by 2030 as it implements its Made in Ontario post-pandemic economic recovery plan. Production of medical isotopes is also part of the plan, and the company said it plans to carry out a harvest of the medical isotope cobalt-60 before the end of the year.

Nuclear helps tackle high energy prices, Foratom says

Published: Fri, 15 Oct 2021 11:05:12 GMT

A European Commission communication that includes a "toolbox" that the EU and its Member States can use to address the immediate impact of high energy prices fails to mention nuclear energy's contribution, Foratom said. By including nuclear, the EU would have a unique opportunity for limiting its dependence on carbon intensive natural gas imports, thereby reducing its exposure to wholesale price fluctuations and its carbon footprint, the European nuclear trade body added.

France makes nuclear offer to Poland

Published: Thu, 14 Oct 2021 11:43:32 GMT

France's EDF has made an offer to the Polish government to build as many as six EPR units. A project of that size would decarbonise 40% of the country's electricity and avoid up to 55 million tons of CO2 per year, EDF said. The "non-binding preliminary offer" represents a range of options for Poland. It details the engineering, procurement and construction that would be needed for four to six EPR units, at either two or three sites. The EPR units would produce 1650 MWe each.
